SETTING THE STAGE
Are you tired of throwing away perfectly good food every week? You're not alone! according to a report by the charity Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP):
9.5 million tonnes
of food waste occurred in the UK in 2018
SO WHAT’S THE PROBLEM? 💥
With rising costs of living, more and more people are struggling to afford high-quality food. Those who are on lower incomes or in vulnerable positions often sacrifice the quality of food they consume to keep up with the increasing prices of their bills.
70% of this total was
intended to be consumed by people
30% was classified
as "inedible parts."
THE REMEDY ✨
WHAT WERE THE MAIN REASONS PEOPLE WASTED FOOD?
No worries, I've got you covered! My awesome app creates yummy recipes using the ingredients you have on hand and the appliances you own. Not only will it save you cash and cut down on waste, but it'll also teach you about healthy eating and eco-friendly practices.
I interviewed 5 participants who were; aged 24-33 years, from various backgrounds & professions, & located worldwide.
“I enjoy cooking food but I am still learning”
My assumption was due to the lack of education/confidence in cooking and life style. This is what was found:

“It’s not whether if it’s healthy or not, it’s whether I can afford it”
There are four key features, which are centred around Gail's pain points;
“Being more financially economic, seems like a really fun and feeling thing to do”
Imagine you're Gail, and you open your fridge to find some forgotten vegetables and leftovers. You want to cook something tasty, but you're not sure what you can make with the ingredients you have.
“It would be nice to have an app that tell what recipes I could make with my leftovers”
So I asked myself: “HMW create a solution that uses the food Gail already has, while also educating her about nutrition and ways to reduce her environmental impact?”
Here’s where my app comes in! With my solution, you can input what you have in your fridge and get recipes tailored to your ingredients.

1. Finding a recipe based on what the user inputs.
Boom! I whipped up three task flows that revolve around three features: Reuse (aka recipe generator), Recycle, and Reduce.
2. Locating a community composting centred in the users desired location.
Check this out - I discovered something amazing! By combining flows 2 and 3, I unleashed two incredibly powerful flows that will knock your socks off! And thus, the journey began! From the depths of my imagination, these concepts were transformed into epic sketches.
With the incorporation of an inviting and down-to-earth colour palette and UI component kit hi-fi wireframes were made.

The task flows were explored and found valuable insights. Combining all 3, we created a masterpiece - a detailed user flow with endless options!…not really just all the possible routes the user could take.

Choosing the right interactions and animations that fit with the brand identity of ‘natural’, 'calming’ and ‘supportiveness’ took some trial and error. I played with different smart animation options and found that the "quick" smart animation struck the perfect balance between good response time and smooth transitions for the user.
